Qikou Ancient Town

  • Description
    • Commodity name: Qikou Ancient Town

Qikou Ancient Town is a national-level AAAA-rated tourist attraction in China, located 50 kilometers south of Linxian County in Lüliang City, Shanxi Province. The ancient town covers an area of 108.45 square kilometers and faces Wubao County in Shaanxi Province across the Yellow River.

The ancient town of Qikou, nestled against the Lüliang Mountains and overlooking the Yellow River, derives its name from the Yellow River’s second shoal—known as “Datong Shoal.” The town’s streets and shops are exemplary of traditional mountain architecture from the Qing Dynasty. Within the ancient town, numerous well-preserved buildings from the Ming and Qing dynasties remain intact, including a variety of commercial structures such as warehouses, money exchange offices, and pawnshops, as well as temples, residential dwellings, and wharves. Among the attractions is the Black Dragon Temple, situated on Wohu Mountain in Qikou. At the confluence of the Datong Shoal and the Qiushui River, facing the Yellow River and backed by Wohu Mountain to the north, the ancient town of Qikou forms a geographically semicircular shape. As early as the Warring States period, it served as a crucial military stronghold; during the late Northern and Southern Dynasties, it became an outpost for resisting the northern nomadic tribes. From the Yuan Dynasty onward, it evolved into a strategically important military site jointly administered by both prefectural and county authorities.

In 2005, it was listed as one of the second batch of China’s Famous Historical and Cultural Towns. In 2006, the “Qikou Ancient Architectural Complex” was designated as a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit. From the Ming and Qing dynasties through the Republic of China period, Qikou Ancient Town thrived as a major commercial hub in northern China, thanks to its strategic location along the Yellow River’s waterway transportation network. In 2003, it was designated by Shanxi Province, and in 2022, it was included in the province’s “9+13” flagship scenic area development plan for phased advancement.
The ancient town of Qikou is renowned as “the first town along the Nine-Bend Yellow River.” It was once one of the most concentrated areas for Shanxi merchants’ shops and brands. To the west, it borders Shaanxi, Gansu, Ningxia, and Inner Mongolia; to the east, it connects to Taiyuan, Beijing, and Tianjin. At its highest point stands the Black Dragon Temple, a scenic overlook offering breathtaking views of the Yellow River. Within the ancient town, you’ll find well-preserved Ming and Qing dynasty buildings such as escort offices and pawnshops—perfect spots for photography and Instagram-worthy snapshots.
