The first batch of China’s famous historical and cultural villages is also known as “Chen Family Courtyard,” as it served as the family residence of the Chen family, prominent merchants from Qikou.
The village layout is uniquely distinctive: the entire village features five vertical alleys, each symbolizing one of the Five Elements. These alleys are interconnected, and the courtyards are seamlessly linked to one another, creating a marvelous scene where “the village itself is a single courtyard, and each courtyard is a miniature mountain village.” The village’s castle-like layout ingeniously combines defensive and residential functions; it also boasts a well-preserved network of roads and an advanced drainage system.
