Abstract
Recently, the 2023 Shanxi Province “Five Smalls” Innovation Competition, jointly organized by the Provincial Federation of Trade Unions, the Provincial Committee of the Communist Youth League, and the Provincial Association for Science and Technology, was announced. The project “A Big Story from Small Sour Jujubes—Construction of a Demonstration Orchard for Sour Jujubes in Lin County and Promotion of Variety Selection and Breeding,” submitted by Shanxi Qikou Hong Agricultural Technology Co., Ltd., won the Second Prize for Outstanding Achievement.
“In 2020, we established a 350-mu demonstration orchard of high-quality jujube trees grafted onto local rootstock in Xishan Village, Qikou Town, along the banks of the Yellow River. The grafting was done that same year, and the trees began bearing fruit right away. This year, we’re already harvesting 11,000 kilograms of fresh jujubes—and we have no worries about sales. With orders coming in online, the total output value could exceed 400,000 yuan,” said Chen Yongzhen, the project leader, with great delight.
Innovation fuels transformation, and labor makes dreams come true. The “Five Smalls” Innovation Contest is a labor competition primarily aimed at young workers, focusing on small inventions, minor innovations, minor upgrades, small-scale designs, and minor suggestions. Its main objective is to drive invention, innovation, and design centered around upgrading and modernizing enterprise products, addressing pressing, challenging, and critical issues that hinder production development, as well as innovating and upgrading outdated technologies, equipment, unreasonable processes, and obsolete operational practices. Since 2022, Shanxi Province has seen participation from 34,300 enterprises and institutions in the contest, with 5.9673 million worker-students taking part. Participants have generated a total of 124,000 “Five Smalls” achievements, among which 4,826 have been granted national patents, yielding economic benefits totaling 14.767 billion yuan.
